| Age Discrimination and Equal Pay in the Ministry of Justice
Age Discrimination and Equal Pay are key themes of our pay campaigning work within the MoJ. In our survey and workplace meetings members have told they are concerned about equal pay within the department and the prison service and a reduction in the length of time it takes to progress to the pay band maximum. Our advice is that the Age Discrimination Regulations and Equal Pay Act may give some large groups of members the opportunity to challenge these issues legally. Details of the advice has been issued to branches and is available below. We have developed an on-line process which will allow for thousands of members to lodge grouped claims with the MoJ. While we hope that negotiations with the department will resolve matters, if negotiations do not achieve our objectives then the legal processes can be used. We also recognise that many members have lodged grievances about the mapping process and that some of these grievances relate to equal pay issues. We have issued some advice for these members which compliments the advice on equal pay and this is also available below. Challenging the MoJ on age discrimination and equal pay is only part of our campaign, we are continuing to use negotiation and if necessary industrial pressure to achieve our objectives in the campaign against regional pay and seeking cost of living increases in line with inflation. 1.
